Our view

The Garmin Approach R50 is not a launch monitor in the portable sense. At 4.1kg with a built-in 10-inch screen, it is an all-in-one home golf simulator — closer in concept to a SkyTrak+ setup than to the R10 it nominally succeeds.

The key distinction from most launch monitors at this price is that everything is self-contained. The screen is built in, the courses are built in, and the cameras are built in. You do not need a separate projector, screen, or computer to play simulator golf. Point it at a net or impact screen, connect to power, and you are playing. For golfers who want a complete simulator experience without building a full bay, that self-contained approach has genuine appeal.

The three high-speed cameras deliver direct metric measurement rather than the estimated spin data that radar devices provide. That is a meaningful accuracy improvement, particularly for iron play where spin numbers matter for understanding ball flight.

The caveats are significant at £4,299. The 4-hour battery life is short for a practice session, and a subscription is required for Home Tee Hero course play on top of the hardware cost. Club tracking stickers are required for club metric data and sold separately. The total investment before you have a complete setup is considerably more than the headline price.

It is also worth being clear about what the R50 is not. The built-in 10-inch screen is for data and course play, not for projecting onto a large impact screen. If you want an immersive large-screen simulator experience, you will still need a projector and screen alongside it — in which case the SkyTrak+ or FlightScope Mevo Gen 2 paired with a proper display is worth comparing.

Pros

  • Self-contained — no separate computer or display required for basic play
  • 3 high-speed cameras for direct metric measurement, not estimates
  • Built-in 10-inch touchscreen for immediate data and course play
  • Putting included in simulator mode — full hole play from drive to putt
  • Impact videos give immediate visual swing feedback
  • Built-in barometer improves carry distance accuracy
  • Carrying case included
  • 43,000+ courses built in
  • Compatible with all major simulator platforms

Cons

  • £4,299.99 is a very significant investment
  • Only 4 hours battery life
  • Subscription required for Home Tee Hero course play — not included in price
  • Club tracking stickers required for club metrics and sold separately (£24.99)
  • 4.1kg — not portable in any practical sense
  • Built-in 10-inch screen is not a replacement for a large projector and impact screen setup
  • IPX3 weather rating — not fully waterproof
  • AC adapter sold separately (£49.99)

The R50 suits dedicated golfers who want a complete home simulator experience without building a full bay setup. If you have a dedicated space — a garage, a spare room, or a garden room — and want to play full rounds from drive to putt on real courses without the complexity of a multi-component setup, the R50 is worth serious consideration. It is not for golfers who want a portable practice tool, and the price point places it firmly in the serious enthusiast category.

TOTAL COST NOTE

The R50 headline price is £4,299.99. Add a Home Tee Hero subscription for course play, club tracking stickers (£24.99), and an AC adapter (£49.99) for a complete setup. If you also want a large-screen experience with a projector and impact screen, budget for those separately — the built-in display is 10 inches, not a projection system.
