Our view
The Garmin Approach R10 launched in 2021 and spent three years as the default recommendation for golfers wanting their first launch monitor. In 2026 it is still a capable device, but the category has moved around it and it is showing its age.
What the R10 does well: it measures 14 parameters accurately enough for meaningful practice, it connects to every major simulator platform, and it fits in a golf bag pocket. For golfers who want to play virtual courses at home through a UK winter, it remains the most accessible entry point.
What the R10 does less well: it requires a smartphone for all data display, outdoor radar performance is better than indoor, and spin data is estimated rather than directly measured. The Garmin Golf membership adds meaningful ongoing cost that does not always appear in the headline price comparison.
The more important consideration is value in 2026. The Shot Scope LM1 costs £280 less and delivers accurate carry data with no subscription. The Rapsodo MLM2PRO costs similar money and uses combined camera and radar for better accuracy with no ongoing fees. The R10's strongest argument remains simulator integration and the Garmin ecosystem — if you already use a Garmin watch and want Home Tee Hero, it makes more sense than it does as a standalone purchase.
Factor in the Garmin Golf membership (required for Home Tee Hero and video recording) when comparing total cost. At roughly £50 per year that adds up to £250 over five years on top of the hardware price.
Pros
- 14 measured metrics — most comprehensive data set at this price point
- Simulator golf on 43,000+ courses via Home Tee Hero
- Compatible with every major simulator platform including E6 and GSPro
- Auto video recording with stats overlay
- IPX7 fully waterproof — better weather rating than most competitors
- Integrates with Garmin watch ecosystem
- Well established with extensive independent reviews available
- Speed training mode included
Cons
- Requires smartphone for all data display
- Garmin Golf membership required for Home Tee Hero and video — ongoing cost not included in purchase price
- Indoor radar performance weaker than outdoor use
- Spin data is estimated not directly measured
- Now five years old with no hardware updates — newer alternatives offer better accuracy at similar prices
- Tripod sold separately (£27.99) and needed for stable indoor use
- Phone mount also sold separately (£34.99)
Who is this for?
| Handicap 0–12 | Low handicap | Good |
| Handicap 13–20 | Mid handicap | Ideal |
| Handicap 21–28 | High handicap | Good |
| Handicap 28+ | Beginner | Marginal |
The R10 suits mid handicap golfers who want simulator golf at home and are already in the Garmin ecosystem. If you use a Garmin golf watch and want your launch monitor data in the same app, the integration is genuinely useful. It is less compelling as a standalone purchase in 2026 given newer alternatives at similar prices. Beginners may find the app dependency and subscription requirements add unnecessary complexity for what is essentially a practice tool.

TOTAL COST NOTE
The R10 headline price is £479.99. A Garmin Golf membership — required for Home Tee Hero simulator play and auto video recording — costs approximately £50 per year. A tripod (£27.99) and phone mount (£34.99) are sold separately and needed for comfortable indoor use. Factor these in when comparing total outlay against alternatives.
