PRGR Portable Launch Monitor

Our view

The PRGR Portable Launch Monitor is the launch monitor equivalent of a reliable pocket tool. It fits in your hand, fits in your pocket, costs from £199, and tells you five things accurately: swing speed, ball speed, carry distance, total distance, and smash factor. There is nothing else to it.

Golf Monthly's reviewer tested it extensively on the range and on the course and concluded it was genuinely impressive for the price — accurate on carry distance, consistent enough to be useful for gapping, and small enough to carry mid-round for data on the course. That real-world endorsement from a credible independent publication at this price point matters.

The honest limitations are straightforward. Club head speed readings can fluctuate — Golf Monthly reported occasional rogue readings roughly once in ten shots, which can be discounted when they appear. There is no app, no Bluetooth, no connectivity — you read the screen and optionally note down your numbers manually. The 500 shot memory means you can scroll back through your session, but nothing syncs anywhere automatically.

The comparison that matters at £199: the Shot Scope LM1 is also £199 and has a built-in colour screen, session sync to the Shot Scope app, and five metrics with no subscription. The PRGR is smaller and simpler — genuinely pocket-sized where the LM1 is bag-sized. For golfers who want something they can carry in a jacket pocket during a round to gap clubs on the course, the PRGR has an advantage the LM1 cannot match. For golfers who want session history and app sync, the LM1 is the better choice at the same price.

The PRGR suits any golfer who wants accurate carry distances in the smallest and simplest possible package. It is particularly useful for golfers who want to use a launch monitor on the course mid-round rather than just at the range — its pocket size makes that genuinely practical in a way no other device at this price achieves. Golfers who want session history, app sync, or more than five metrics should look at the Shot Scope LM1 at the same price or the Voice Caddie SC300i at around £320.
