Our view
The S12 makes its case almost entirely on battery life — 30 hours GPS and 10 weeks smartwatch are genuinely extraordinary figures that no competitor at this price matches. The sunlight-readable MIP display is a real advantage over AMOLED on the brightest days. At £119.99 on sale from £179.99 it is exceptional value for a Garmin with 43,000+ courses. The honest limitations are the lack of AutoShot tracking and the MIP display quality gap versus the S44. If you can stretch to £239.99 the S44 adds AMOLED, AutoShot and health monitoring. If battery life and simplicity matter most — or budget is the constraint — the S12 is a strong buy at the sale price. Worth noting the security update end date of March 2023 — this is an older device and Garmin will eventually discontinue software support.
Pros
- 30-hour GPS battery is class-leading — no other Garmin golf watch comes close
- Sunlight-readable MIP display never washes out in bright conditions
- At £119.99 on sale it is the most affordable way into the Garmin golf ecosystem
- Lightest Garmin golf watch at 34.1g — barely noticeable on the wrist
- 43,000+ courses without subscription for core GPS functionality
- Simple and focused — does exactly what most golfers need
Cons
- MIP display — not AMOLED, noticeably less sharp and vibrant than S44 and S70
- No AutoShot tracking — shot distance is manual only
- No health monitoring whatsoever
- Only 125MB storage — very limited
- No PlaysLike Distance or Green Contour even with Garmin Golf membership
- Security updates ended March 2023 — an older device now in end-of-life support
- Garmin proprietary charging — not USB-C
